Family Holiday Boundaries Worksheet
Understanding Boundaries
A boundary is a limit or rule you set for yourself in relationships. It defines what behavior you will or won't accept from others, and how you'll respond. Boundaries are not:
- Threats or ultimatums
- Ways to control others
- Punishments
Boundaries differ from consequences in that:
- Boundaries are rules you set for yourself
- Consequences are actions you take when boundaries are crossed
Step 1: Identify Your Needs and Limits
Reflect on past family holiday experiences. List 3-5 situations that caused you stress or discomfort:
Step 2: Define Your Boundaries
For each situation, write a clear, simple boundary statement using "I" language:
- I will...
- I won't...
- I need...
- I don't want...
- It's not okay for...
Step 3: Communicate Your Boundaries
Practice expressing your boundaries calmly and directly. Write how you'll communicate each:
Step 4: Plan for Enforcement
For each boundary, decide on a consequence if it's not respected:
- If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
- If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
- If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
- If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
- If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
Step 5: Self-Care Strategies
List 3 self-care activities you can do during family gatherings to maintain your boundaries:
Step 6: Positive Affirmations
Write 3 positive affirmations to remind yourself of the importance of your boundaries:
- I have the right to...
- My needs are important because...
- Setting boundaries helps me...
Remember, setting and maintaining boundaries is a skill that takes practice. Be patient with yourself as you implement these changes
