Samuel Beckett says, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

“With the right mindset, we can’t lose–we either practice what we’ve learned or we learn what we need to practice.” -Noura

“Don’t worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.” -Sherman Finesilver

“Everybody dies, but not everybody lives.” -A. Sachs

“Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” -Steve Maraboli

Fixed Mindset:

  • Belief that abilities and intelligence are innate and unchangeable
  • Avoids challenges and difficult tasks to prevent failure
  • Views effort as a sign of lack of ability; believes things should come naturally
  • Ignores or avoids feedback and criticism
  • Feels threatened by the success of others, seeing it as a reflection of their own inadequacy
  • Gives up easily in the face of obstacles
  • Fears making mistakes and often plays it safe to avoid looking foolish
  • Is more focused on seeking approval and validation from others

Examples:

  1. If you have marriage problems, your fixed mind might say, “If he really loved me, he’d stop doing ____ and he'd understand that I need ____ without having to tell him all the time.”
  2. “I am clumsy and I have social anxiety. That’s just the way I was born. I can’t change that and I’m okay with it now, even if I don’t like it.”
  3. “There is no way I’d do that. I don’t want to look like an idiot. I don’t have time to do that anyway.”
  4. “_________ is such an overachiever. I would hate doing everything he does. I like my free time and my routine and I'm glad I’m not so focused on those things. Who has time or money for those kinds of things?”

Growth Mindset:

  • Belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed and improved over time
  • Embraces challenges and sees them as opportunities for growth
  • Understands that effort is the path to mastery and success
  • Welcomes feedback and criticism as a means to learn and improve
  • Is inspired by the success of others, using it as motivation to work harder
  • Persists in the face of setbacks and obstacles
  • Sees mistakes as valuable learning experiences and is not afraid to take risks
  • Values the process of learning and development over seeking external validation

Examples:

“This will make a great journal entry that I can laugh and learn about. Maybe not right now, but soon.”

“This door closing is just leading me to another door that is opening that will be an even better fit for me. It’ll help me become who I’m meant to become.”

“I’m not going to let this setback knock me down. I knew it would be hard, but it’s worth it. I know what I want and why I want it and I’m not going to let this stop me.”

“I recognize that there is enough of everything that I need to succeed. I will find the time. I will find the money. I will learn the skills. I can ask for help. I can do hard things.”
