Welcome to Fulfillment Therapy. I’m Kendra Nielson—wife, mom, licensed therapist, and someone who’s been right where you are. If you’re doing everything “right” but still feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and empty inside, know you’re not alone. Maybe you thought life, marriage, and parenting would be simpler or more rewarding by now, yet some days all you want to do is hide under the covers, scroll and series binge endlessly, or reach for comfort food instead of facing the stress and chaos at home. I get it—I’ve been there.

This podcast was created for people like you—parents and adults in the thick of it, juggling family, work, and personal growth, struggling to find balance and meaning in the daily grind. Here, we talk real life, real struggles, and real solutions to help you break free from the exhausting rat race. We’ll take small, doable steps toward flourishing, improving your mental health, and living with purpose—even when life feels overwhelming.

You’ll find honest conversations with other leading experts and practical tools to reduce stress, handle overwhelm, and care for yourself without guilt or shame. We’ll explore how to refill your cup, set healthy boundaries, and reconnect with your values so you have more energy and joy to share with your family. It’s about creating a life that feels meaningful to you without unrealistic perfectionism.

We’ll transform exhaustion into strength, chaos into calm, and daily survival into a life you love. It really is possible!

Quotes:
As Lindsay C. Gibson points out, "When parents refuse to grow emotionally, their children become their emotional caretakers."
"Growing up with emotionally immature parents means learning to cope with emotional chaos as a survival skill," Gibson adds.
As Dr. Carla Marie Manly notes, "In a marriage, if someone is emotionally unavailable, it can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, unmet needs, lack of intimacy and difficult feelings."
Natalie Lue provides insight into the root of this behavior: "Fear is an emotional response to a perceived danger - for him that danger is the consequences of commitment and intimacy. The danger isn't you per se; it's all the things that you and your expectations, needs, and wants bring to his life."
As Gibson reminds us, "Healing from emotional neglect begins when you recognize that you are worthy of the love you didn't receive."
As Natalie Lue reminds us, "Emotionally unavailable means not fully emotionally present. It's struggling or being unable to access emotions healthily and as a result, being emotionally distant due to 'walls' which basically act as barriers to true emotional intimacy."
As Gibson wisely states, "The unpredictability of an emotionally immature parent leaves children constantly on edge."

Quotes:
Dr. Martin Seligman, a pioneer in positive psychology, states, "The aim of positive psychology is to catalyze a change in psychology from a preoccupation only with repairing the worst things in life to also building the best qualities in life."

Brené Brown emphasizes the importance of celebration, saying, "Joy comes to us in ordinary moments. We risk missing out when we get too busy chasing down the extraordinary."

As Anne Lamott beautifully puts it, "...what if you wake up some day, and you're 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn't go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life?"
